Screech Owl Physical Exam
An adult red phase screech owl was presented to the Cornell University Wildlife Clinic after being hit by a car.
A complete physical examination was performed on admission, which included auscultation of the heart and lungs and palpation. The wings and the legs were first checked for fractures and for soft tissue injuries, then the range of motion of both wings was assessed. An ophthalmoscope was used to examine the structures of the eyes.
Mild dehydration was noted and subcutaneous fluids were administered. Evidence of ocular trauma was noted and the bird was further evaluated by our veterinary ophthalmologist. The presence of hyphema or blood in the anterior chamber of the eye was confirmed. The owl was treated with topical antibiotics in both eyes to prevent secondary infections and the eye was allowed to heal. The owl was then transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for continued care and to assess the bird’s ability to locate and catch prey. Once the animal was successful in hunting it was released to the wild.
